Monitoring Equipment for Derbandikhan Dam and Dokan Dam, Iraq 2009 - 2011

After more than 50 years of operation of both dams, it has been proved that the existing dam monitoring system was unsatisfactory from the point of view of its functionality as well as the quantity of devices. The main purpose of the project was the modernization of the existing monitoring system and the improvement of dam’s safety. The objective of the project was the reconstruction, modernization and extension on of the monitoring system for Derbandikhan and Dokan dams. The scope of the project was its preparation, the supply of monitoring devices, their installation and commissioning, and staff training.

Derbandikhan Dam
Monitoring devices were extended by new piezometer boreholes in grouting galleries and in the left sliding area. Monitoring of landslides was provided with new inclinometer boreholes. The existing monitoring system was maintained and up-dated by means of the installation of new instruments and an automatic data acquisition system. The network of the monitoring system is deployed at six locations where the data has to be collected. Each location is equipped with a data logger for reading, collecting and storing of data. Data loggers are connected to the control room for data processing, storing and evaluation. Approximately 50 sensors of different types were supplied and installed (crack meters, thermometers, pressure transducers and seepage monitors).

Dokan Dam
Monitoring devices were extended by a new inverted pendulum in a grouting gallery.
The existing monitoring system was maintained and up-dated by means of the installation of new instruments and an automatic data acquisition system. The network of the monitoring system is deployed at three locations. Two locations are equipped with a data logger for reading, collecting and storing of data. Data loggers are connected to the control room for data processing, storing and evaluation. The last location is equipped with stand-alone data loggers for sensors reading and data collection but data has to be transferred manually to the control room.
Approximately 50 sensors of different types were supplied and installed (crack meters, thermometers, pressure transducers, seepage monitors and a telependulum).
